I'm starting a little beauty detox.
When it comes to makeup and skincare products, the hype often overshadows an important question: what really goes into what goes on your skin? This is something I've asked myself more lately, thanks to a book called No More Dirty Looks by Siobhan O'Connor and Alexandra Spunt. (I give full credit for this discovery to my mom, who is very health-conscious and a minimalist when it comes to makeup!)
The book exposes the uglier sides of the beauty industry, from lack of regulation to the common ingredients that can put us at risk for health problems. It's filled with explanations of unpronounceable ingredients, dermatologists' points of view and recommendations for products (and diet/lifestyle choices) that give you beauty benefits without risks. I've only read bits and pieces of the book so far, but it's already elicited a few "omg that product contains what!?" moments. The authors also started up a blog, nomoredirtylooks.com, which has plenty of tips and interviews!
I've been needing to replenish a couple of products in my daily beauty routine, so I decided to go for healthy alternatives. I purchased the Laura Mercier Mineral Powder SPF 15 in Natural Beige on the recommendation of No More Dirty Looks, which claims that this is the mineral powder with the purest ingredients (in contrast to most foundations on the market, which are pore-clogging). It offers a light-medium buildable coverage and a radiant finish. And for a daytime facial moisturizer, I went to Whole Foods and picked out the Dr. Hauschka Melissa Day Cream, which is formulated for sensitive combination skin like mine. Melissa (lemon balm) is supposed to balance your skin, and other notable ingredients include coconut oil, jojoba oil and witch hazel. I will keep you posted on how I fare with both of these products... so far, I'm enjoying them a lot and loving the natural finish they give.
Have you used either of these? I would love to know your recommendations for "healthy" beauty products!

I've been really into thinking about what products are in skin care recently and have made a lot of big changes to my routines, next up is the makeup!!
ReplyDeleteI think I might buy this book to help me out with the transition :)

This book sounds really interesting - I definitely need to start looking into what REALLY goes into the make-up I've been using. I can't wait to hear about how you're liking those two products. x

PS I work at a 5 star spa and it is true, so many products contain a lot of damaging ingredients which can cause us a lot of health problems. It is actually really, really scary.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I like Dermalogica and RegimA so much.

I like the look of Laura Mercier Mineral Powder. I wonder if BB cream counts toward the beauty detox.
ReplyDeleteWould love to know how you get on.

Groupon had a deal for The All Natural Face right now which has great reviews! I'm going to buy it. I try to stick to more natural products and completely vegan. I find a lot of Indie brands are great.

I really like the idea of paring down your skincare and makeup routine and focusing on more natural ingredients in order to simply things and make them healthier. I'll take a peek at that book for sure! I've used the Laura Mercier Mineral foundation on and off in the past and quite liked it- great coverage and didn't irritate my skin. I'm super curious about the Dr. Hauschka Melissa cream, as my skin is combo/oily and sensitive as well. Thanks for sharing :)

No more Dirty Looks sounds like a really interesting read, I'll need to check it out! And though I don't know much about makeup, I do like to keep it as simple as possible, and hopefully will be able to learn more on what products are better for my skin. Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like such an interesting book. I've always been super conscious of what I eat and put in my body, but I've never payed much attention to what I put on my skin! I'll definitely look into it! x
ReplyDeleteI used that last summer - it was a really nice product!
ReplyDeleteThat book looks really good, I'm going to look into it. Sometimes I forget that being healthy applies to my current cosmetic habits as well!
ReplyDeleteOoh yay for healthy beauty products! I haven't tried either, but it sounds great that you're helping out your skin :)
