Weekend Reading

Some books are meant to be read under a blanket in front of the fire, accompanied by a cup of frothy cocoa that stretches on as long as possible. Leif Enger's Peace Like a River is one of them. The novel begins in a cabin in the Midwest during the 1960s, where petty revenge spirals into a violent act of self-defense that disrupts the lives of three young children. Given that the plot eventually involves jailbreak, it's not as suspenseful as one might expect; at times, it's a bit bizarre/cliche in its incorporation of magical realist "miracles". But so far, the main highlight of the book for me is the deliciously poetic prose. I'm about halfway through, and I can't wait to keep reading during Thanksgiving break.

And of course, some e-reads, mostly discovered during rush-hour commutes:

Why art makes you smarter.
These DIY advent calendars are inspiring me to make one of my own.
This self-taught photographer rose to fame after publishing his brilliant, surrealist self-portraits online.
The most adorable half-up-do ever?
